
Though the theoretical foundations and background of MUES intiated in 2004, it took a few years to prepare a detailed work plan to include the project into 2011 National Investment Program as a sector-based digital transformation system. The planning and structure of MUES has been developed by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and Museums, while its software coding has been carried out by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM since 2016 through cooperation protocols and various agreements. Project Coordination Unit of the Ministry collect data on approximately 3.5 million artifacts housed in 216 public museums across the country, as well as those in 430 private museums and thousands of private collections.
